Space Interface II – a collaborative exhibition/performance by Mathew Emmett & Eberhard Kranemann (formerly of Kraftwerk).
KARST 2-10 September, Plymouth [https://goo.gl/maps/siKynfuYf1x] Space Interface II is a collaborative exhibition between Kranemann and Emmett who synthesise hybrid space through mixed reality performance. Kranemann and Emmett act cooperatively to acculturate the audience’s perception of physical space by creating a multilevel immersive environment in which the performers and audience are encouraged to simultaneously occupy multiple points on the mixed reality continuum.
In addition to exhibiting the original Space Interface works previously shown at Weithorn Galerie, Düsseldorf (2015), Kranemann and Emmett will include new and complementary works, that address the themes and discourse of their ongoing collaboration resynchronising the boundaries of art and science.
Artist Biographies:
Eberhard Kranemann is an innovator in audiovisual art and avantgarde music. Having previously worked with Joseph Beuys, his collaborative practice continues to be an important testbed for the origination of experimentation. He is also known for cofounding electronic music bands such as Kraftwerk, Neu! Pissoff, and later assumed the pseudonym Fritz Müller. Mathew Emmett is an artist and architect specializing in site responsive installation, sound and interdisciplinary research in situated cognition. He trained at the Bartlett, Architectural Association and attended Karlheinz Stockhausen’s summer school, and has since performed at the TATE, exhibited internationally, and continued collaboration with dance choreographer Adam Benjamin with projects in Japan, Perception Lab, Germany and the architectural theorist Charles Jencks. Emmett and Kranemann are represented by the Weithorn Galerie, Düsseldorf.

Quantum Consciousness.

Quantum Consciousness.

Quantum Consciousness: A visual/sonic installation that immerses the viewer in quantum phenomenon.
During the residency at i-DAT  artist Paul Thomas  assisted by Luke Christison  has been able to translate his art Quantum Consciousness to a fully immersive  audio-visualisation  dome environment of atomic data which indexes the quantum “movement” of an electron. This project delivers an aesthetic and immersive experience that places the viewer inside the virtual superposition of a sub-atomic particle (i.e. its field of probability). This audiovisual experience establishes a metaphor and indexical map of human thought. The quantum spin of the electron here mapped is serving as the conduit for the form of the sensory stimuli of the work. The broader significance of Quantum Consciousness concerns the possibility of non-human, computational intelligence commingling with human consciousness. This link stems from the fact that the “material” of the electron and its quantum behaviour is the basis of the possibility of quantum computation.
Quantum Consciousness (in collaboration with Kevin Raxworthy) is in the visualization of the co-emergence of thought-data (viewer) and quantum-data (electron). The scientific research informing the work was conducted in collaboration with Assoc. Professor Andrea Morello. Dr.Morello’s current research looks at controlling the spin of electrons and nuclei for the development of the processor in quantum computer. The experiment makes visible and audible the spin of the superposition of a phosphorous electron that has been bombarded by microwave signals. The paradox of the quantum superposition (best articulated in the Schrodinger’s Cat – thought experiment) exists as an actual and empirical condition in which an electron occupies multiple positions in space simultaneously, but none specifically.
The scientific data for this project is generated from a microwave signal which transforms a reading of Richard Feynman’s (1982) paper on the birth of the quantum computer. The link between the quantum computer, consciousness and artistic expression is presented via the installation through the co-emergence of thought and quantum conditions. Quantum Consciousness is thus an experiment in the imaging and materialising of impossible states of quantum matter and the co-emergence of human consciousness.
Quantum Consciousness is featured on the March cover of the prestigious journal Nature Nanotechnologyhttp://www.nature.com/nnano/journal/v11/n3/covers/index.html

In recent decades, an art movement has emerged that illuminates the latest advances in science. The Science Museum’s Roger Highfield joins science historian Arthur I. Miller, author of Colliding Worlds: How Cutting-Edge Science is Redefining Contemporary Art, artist Paul Prudence and conceptual designer Mike Phillips to explore the new avant-garde. Find out more about the artists involved, what drives them and their struggles in developing a dramatically different art form.

BunB 2016-Data Science + Eco Action.

BunB 2016-Data Science + Eco Action.

i-DAT presents at Balance Unbalance 2016 to announce i-DAT’s hosting of BunB 2017.
The theme for BunB 2016 is “Data Science + Eco Action”.
How can we extract knowledge from large volumes of environmental and related data? How that can be used in benefit of the human society? What should we change in our thinking and in our behaviour? Individual vs community vs global: What matters? Why big or complex data is so relevant to our daily life? How the capture, analysis, curation, sharing, storage… and control of large data could rapidly change our world? What positive sides does it have? What not so positive, and even risks does it have? What data science has to do with humanitarian organizations? And with electronic art?
We want to inspire explorations of how artists can participate in this major challenge of our ecological crisis. We need to use creative tools and transdisciplinary action to create perceptual, intellectual and pragmatic changes. We want to discuss our proposals for the future from a diversity of cultural perspectives and socio-economic situations with open minds.

Quorum Workshop at Cairotronica

Quorum Workshop at Cairotronica

http://www.cairotronica.com

………………………………………………………………………………|
QUORUM SENSING:
This QUORUM SENSING workshop will play with algorithmic systems and real-time data, generated by physical and social behaviour and interactions with the environment [architecture/landscapes/etc].
The workshop incorporates a bio-inspired algorithmic process to generate dynamic and evolving collective behaviours, creating a volatile system of stimuli and response that is manifest as data driven interactive objects, installations and immersive audio-visual experiences.
In the wild Quorum Sensing is decentralised swarm based decision making process that can be seen in biological [insects/bacteria/flocking birds] and technological systems [networks/software/robots]. The behaviour of one individual in a crowd or swarm influences their neighbour creating a ripple effect across the swarm… and beyond. These behaviours generate new dynamic patterns which will slowly reveal the collective desires of the hive mind.
The QUORUM SENSING workshop is an extension of existing work being carried out by i-DAT around social media analytics and creation of highly immersive and interactive real-time data visualisation.

THE MATTER OF THE IMMATERIAL

THE MATTER OF THE IMMATERIAL

Consciousness Reframed 2015:
THE MATTER OF THE IMMATERIAL
– a technoetic tribunal

20-22 November 2015
Songjiang District, Shanghai, China
How variable is reality? How malleable is the virtual? Where do truth and technology overlap? In a world of art and ideas that is increasingly transcultural, transmedial, and transvisionary, who owns authorship? Where is art located? Does the technology of the nano, bio or robo excite or exhaust creativity? Can the mind be printed in three dimensions? Is participation an illusion of interaction? What is the Zen of product design, the Tao of architecture, or the I Ching of post-biological art? Is theory covert practice? Does social media induce speculative stasis? Will artists farm the pharmacology of the mind? What are art’s unasked questions?
